Executive Summary

The state of Illinois greatly appreciates the cooperative effort of all Illinois colleges and universities and in submitting the distance education course enrollment data for this report.


Online Courses Enrollments (Internet and Blended)
Illinois colleges and universities reported 183,323 enrollments in internet and blended courses that account for 99.98 % of all enrollments during the Summer 2022 term.

Online Course Enrollments by Sector
Public universities accounted for 38.70 %, independent not-for-profit institutions accounted for 17.21 % and independent for-profit institutions accounted for 44.08 % of online enrollments for the Summer 2022 term.

Blended Courses Enrollments
All Illinois institutions now provide data on blended courses. The data shows 9,214 enrollments that account for 5.03 % of all enrollments for Summer 2022. The definition used for blended during this term is 25-75% of the course at a distance or via an online modality.

Public University Enrollment
Public universities reported offering 70,956 enrollments, accounting for 38.70 % of all online course enrollments.

Independent For-Profit Colleges and Universities
Independent for-profit colleges and universities reported offering 80,818 enrollments, accounting for 44.08 % of all online course enrollments.

Independent Not-For-Profit Colleges and Universities
Independent not-for-profit colleges and universities reported 31,549 enrollments, accounting for 17.21 % of all online course enrollments.

Institutions With the Largest Online Enrollments
The Illinois institutions reporting the largest online course enrollments during the Summer 2022 term in each sector of higher education in Illinois were:

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (21,641) from the public universities.

DeVry University (80,328) from the Private For-Profit Universities.

DePaul University (8,149) from the Private Not-For-Profit Universities.


Online Enrollments by Residency

The vast majority of all online course enrollments reported by Illinois public colleges and universities were from students residing in the state. Independent colleges and universities had a majority of online student course enrollments living in the USA, but outside of Illinois.

The residency of students enrolled in online courses varied by sector, with Public Universities having the highest percentage of Illinois residents (72.88 %), followed by the Private Not for Profit Universities (62.33 %).
